The Animal Rescue League of Berks County is Greater Reading’s largest animal shelter. Located on Route 724 in Cumru Township, the facility sits on 10 picturesque acres and includes walking trails, a six-stall barn, two fenced play yards, agility equipment, a surgery center, 70 dog kennels and enough room to house 100 cats.
At any given time a vast array of animals are available for adoption including cats, dogs, horses, birds, guinea pigs and snakes. Adoption fees are very affordable and include microchipping, spay/neuter surgery, and some vaccines. At the time of adoption, new parents receive a folder filled with coupons and discounts at local veterinarians and pet stores along with information on transitioning their new pet into their home.
Volunteer opportunities abound at the ARL and include dog walking, fostering, Book Buddies, community outreach, Pawsome Partners, Kennel Companions and more. Community groups are welcome to schedule tours and parents can even host a birthday party for their pet-loving child in our education room.
Our surgery center offers low-cost spay and neuter services to pet owners in the community and low-cost vaccine clinics take place April – October.
